New Jersey
Map of New Jersey (1777)
New Jersey began as the proprietorships of West Jersey and the heavily-Scottish East Jersey, sold by the Duke of York from his New York possessions. Disorder and confusion over jurisdiction and land rights led to the combination of the two into the single colony of New Jersey in 1702. A border dispute with New York would bedevil relations between the neighboring colonies throughout the eighteenth century.
