A triumphant Washington is shown grouped with the American and French generals who combined forces to defeat the British under Cornwallis at the siege and battle of Yorktown in October 1781. From left to right in the front row are Lafayette, Washington, Rochambeau, and Tilghman, while half-hidden behind them are Chastellux and Lincoln. Dead horses on the beach and sunken British ships in the river bear witness to the recent contest. The picture was painted for Francis Bailey, official printer to the Continental Congress and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
