This is one of eleven known American sugar boxes, ten of which have been published (see Kane, pp. 328, 518, 980). Four of the exisiting sugar boxes were made by John Coney, five by Edward Winslow, one by Daniel Greenough, and one has been unidentified. Nine are in public collections and two are privately owned. They are among the most elaborate forms and sophisticated interpretations of the baroque style in early American silver. Superbly conceived and executed, this box gives ample evidence of Coney's skill as a silversmith and the high level of the craft in the colonies by 1700.
