Sugar tongs of this scissor type with scrolled arms and shell-shaped grips were the most popular form during the middle decades of the eighteenth century. Relatively few are fully marked. This finely chased pair is part of a set with six teaspoons and their original shagreen-covered case (accessions 1954-563, 1-6).
