A scene showing twelve men in a small open boat, some of them rowing or poling it across a body of water dotted with ice floes. Two men near the center of the boat support a flag on a pole, holding it at about a 45-degree angle; the flag has a field of red and white stripes and a blue, star-studded canton. The background is pinkish near the center horizon line, the distant shores rendered nebulously.
