This rare royal bust can be dated fairly closely, for it would have logically been made shortly after the subject's investiture as Prince of Wales in 1751. One other white example of the bust is recorded while a version decorated in enamel colors survives. The colored example is considered to be Longton Hall, and possibly all three were made there, although the Colonial Williamsburg bust exhibits many Chelsea characteristics.
