Delaware

King Augustus Adolphus established New Sweden in the Delaware Valley in 1637. In the decades thereafter, Scandinavian and Dutch settlers moved into the region, followed by groups of English puritans. The Dutch took over Delaware in 1655, adding it to New Netherland, only to lose it to the English in 1664. Added to William Penn's proprietorship, Delaware became a separate colony from Pennsylvania (although still under Penn) in 1701.
