Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

The destination of choice for exiles fleeing religious persecution in Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island differed markedly from every other British Colony. Founded in 1644 on a patent from parliament, Charles II granted a charter for the colony in 1663 that retained an elected governor and legislature and strengthened its character as a model of religious toleration.
