"Apotheosis of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington" print used for a bed curtain, Britain, used in America, ca. 1785, plate-printed linen-cotton, 1959-18. Washington drives a chariot; Franklin, wearing his trademark fur cap, stands next to the female figure of Liberty. After hostilities ceased between Britain and America, British merchants quickly responded to Americans' desires for fashionable textiles with patriotic motifs.
