Benedict Arnold Lands in Virginia
British Brigadier General Benedict Arnold, who defected from the Americans in October, arrives in Virginia with a major force. Largely unopposed, he moves up the James River, destroying and capturing property and supplies, and takes Richmond on January 5, 1781, burning its buildings, state records, and a foundry. Arnold then establishes a base at Portsmouth. More British troops arrive in March, when Arnold is superseded by Major General William Phillips.
