British Capture Charleston
In a major blow to American hopes in the southern colonies, Charleston, South Carolina, falls to British troops under Sir Henry Clinton, who does not allow the garrison of more than 600 patriots to surrender with the honors of war. The captured troops include the vast majority of Virginians then serving in the Continental Army.
