British Raid in Virginia
A combined British army and navy force lands in Portsmouth, Virginia, and then proceeds to take an American fort at Norfolk, and burn the supply center at Suffolk (50 miles south of Williamsburg). Virtually unimpeded, the British forces withdraw on May 24 after destroying an estimated £2,000,000 worth of boats, tobacco, and other supplies.
