France Agrees to Treaty of Amity and Commerce with America
The formal treaty between France and the United States is signed, which pledges French military support for the Americans. Benjamin Franklin's letter to Congress informing it of the achievement is published by the printers of the Virginia Gazette as "IMPORTANT INTELLIGENCE, JUST RECEIVED BY EXPRESS" on May 8.
