Virginia Abolishes Entail

Having returned to Williamsburg from Philadelphia to help "establish a government truly republican" and remove any trace "of ancient or future aristocracy," Thomas Jefferson successfully steers a bill through the new state assembly to abolish the practice of entail in Virginia, which kept estates within one family. Although rarely practiced, Jefferson considered the largely symbolic move one of his most important accomplishments.
