The Destruction of Norfolk
British warships open fire on Norfolk, Virginia, but cause little damage. Patriot officers, however, lose control of disaffected troops in the city. Over the next two days, their soldiers destroy two-thirds of it (although the British are blamed). Virginia's Committee of Safety then orders most of what remains leveled and abandoned.
