James Otis Originates American Opposition to Taxation Without Representation
One of the first colonial responses to British policies enacted after the Seven Years War, Otis publishes in Boston The Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved, which makes the claim that "Taxes are not to be laid on the people, but by their consent in person, or by deputation."
